RUMFORD — A group of majorettes from the Rumford area will compete against 25 teams at the Maine State Baton Twirling Championships in Kennebunk on Saturday.
For the past month, the Mountain Valley Majorettes have been practicing their four-minute performance. Their theme is Willy Wonka, said coach Tammy Parent of Rumford, who has led the team for four years.
She was a flag twirler when she was in high school.
The team has competed in five events this season, taking four firsts and one second, Parent said. There are five more, including Saturday’s.
Parent leads them through the twirling as well the routine that fits the theme. They curtsy to the judges, make eye contact and really get into character, she said.
Team members are Mountain Valley Middle School eighth-grader Dellshawn Harris, Mountain Valley High School seniors Heather Durfee, Chelsea Gaudet, Sylvella Harris, captain, junior Brittany Cole, Mountain Valley High School 2011 graduate Krystal Parent and 2010 graduate Kristen Harris.
