AUGUSTA — Spring leaves Maine roads in their shabbiest shape all year. And a highway-improvement group is looking for help in finding Maine’s worst road of them all.

The Maine Better Transportation Association has launched the 3rd Annual Worst Road in Maine Contest. As the weather warms and potholes appear, Maine drivers are asked to consider the impact potholes, ruts and cracking pavement have on them.

Association Executive Director Maria Fuentes says a recent study shows the average Mainer pays $250 a year in added vehicle maintenance costs due to bad roads. But Fuentes says there’s a greater cost in safety risks and lost mobility.

The contest will continue until May 15 at midnight. Participants must complete entry forms and submit a photo at www.FixMaineRoads.org or www.facebook.com/FixMaineRoads.
