LEWISTON — “GONE: The Mystery of the DON Disaster,” the true story of 34 people who died in one of New England’s worst boating accidents, will air Thursday and Saturday, April 12 and 14, on MPBN.
All aboard were lost, and unlike the great ship of 1912, the fate of the DON remains a mystery. The wreck was never found and no witnesses saw the tragic final moments of the DON.
The June 29,1941, sinking was eclipsed in history by Pearl Harbor six months later.
“GONE” was produced in Harpswell, where the doomed power cruiser departed. Local residents perform period re-enactments in the original locations. A dive team, including noted wreck diver, author and TV host John Chatterton, searches for evidence.
Interviews with descendants reveal the continuing emotional impact of the tragedy. Retired airline pilot and mariner Ken Crocker presents an accident reconstruction.
“GONE” was produced by Marilyn Taylor. Dave Wilkinson directed the film and produced moody orchestral music for the soundtrack. Taylor and Wilkinson also produce MPBN’s popular, Emmy-nominated weekly show “incredibleMAINE.”
“GONE” will be aired at 10 p.m. Thursday, April 12, and at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14.
