100 years ago, 1912
The step of the water wheel which generates power at the J.W. White Company lumber mill by the cross canal broke late Tuesday afternoon, and since that time the mill has not been running. It is expected that it will be repaired by Thursday and everything again in working order. This accident is not unusual at this time of year when water is high and sediment is passing through it. The dirt wears upon the step or block which holds the shaft of the wheel until it breaks or wears away.

50 years ago, 1962
Lewiston employees of the Pepperell Manufacturing Co. yesterday ratified a new two-year contract agreement between the Textile Workers Union of America  and management of the firm. The contract provides for a 3 ¼-percent wage increase and grand additional fringe benefits. Local pay scales will jump a little more than five cents an hour.

25 years ago, 1987
While scores of people were displaced by rising floodwaters last week in the Twin Cities, rats and other rodents were also driven from their homes and area health officials say steps should be taken to keep them from moving into cellars, dumpsters or anywhere there might be food. Auburn City Health Officer said, “They’re getting hungry and when they’re hungry they’re not scared. They probably will get vicious.”
