100 years ago, 1912
 The most discouraging news of the day is an Associated Press dispatch from Brunswick saying that the San Jose Scale has appeared at Mere Point and also in Wells and South Lewiston. This is the most terrible orchard pest known. It spreads with great rapidity and when once established is well nigh destructive. State Horticulturist Gardner is said to have located the pest on the fine farm of George A. Wiseman of Lewiston.

50 years ago, 1962
Residents of the Blanchard St., Lewiston, area last evening marched on the Board of Public Works to demand that action be taken to make their street passable. They told the board that since a Portland construction company tore up the street during work on the new Lewiston Junior High School, they have not been able to take their cars to their homes, except during the winter months when the ground was frozen. However, during the thaw access has been limited to a narrow board walk through the area.
 
25 years ago, 1987
The Twin Cities sewage treatment plant has already used more than half of its budget for sludge disposal, an expense that City Administrator Lucien B. Gosselin says could “create havoc” later on in the budget year. The cost has increased dramatically because many farmers, fearing the presence of dioxin, are unwilling to spread the sludge on their land.
