MECHANIC FALLS — The Sanitary District’s ongoing program to separate stormwater from the flow to the treatment plant will benefit from the Maine Department of Transportation’s paving project, Town Manager John Hawley told selectmen Monday.

He said he signed an agreement with MDOT that will pay for half the $245,000 cost to separate stormwater along Lewiston Street, in the area of the former Marcal Mill complex.

“The Sanitary District could not sign the agreement as they are not eligible as a nonmunicipal entity,” Hawley said.

This summer MDOT will pave Route 121 from the Hackett Mills bridge over the Little Androscoggin River at the Minot-Poland town line to the bridge that crosses the Little Androscoggin River in downtown Mechanic Falls.

Hawley noted that the town will also receive some assistance rebuilding sidewalks near the bridge, with the town contributing $25,000 to the project.

Hawley also reported that a new system to track usage of fuel from the town pumps has been ordered and should be installed in a couple of months.

In the past two years, Hawley noted, some $1,600 in fuel remains unaccounted for with the key system being used to identify who is drawing fuel. The card system will instantly identify the proper account that ought to be charged for the fuel.

Hawley also announced that 31 people have applied for the town clerk position, interviews are being scheduled, and he hopes the new clerk will be in the office by May 1.

In other business, the council voted to award the contract for a new Water Department backhoe to Beauregard Equipment. It bid $43,400 for a 2012 Case 580SN, after a trade-in allowance.

The council also recognized members of the Pink Feather Foundation for their support of people in the immediate area who find themselves facing hard times. The council is recommending the group for the Spirit of America award.

Letters of thanks are also being sent to students at Poland Regional High School for their donation of $675.72 given to the town to go toward those in need of heating assistance.

The council was also reminded that a public hearing on the municipal budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 will be held at 7 p.m. May 2. After that the council will give final approval for a budget that will then go before town voters on June 12.
