Many activities were planned for the month to help encourage the 217 students to “Drop Everything and Read”… DEAR for short.

On March 9 the members of the Monmouth Academy National Honor Society chapter came over to help celebrate a belated birthday for Dr. Seuss. Members went to each classroom and read a Dr. Seuss story to the students, many choosing, “The Cat in the Hat.”

On March 23 guest author Rebekah Raye visited the school and told stories using many beautiful illustrations to all the classes. Also on the 23rd, community members came in and read to each class. Volunteers included Dan Roy, fire chief in Monmouth; Rick Amero and Steve Philbrook, principals at Monmouth Academy and Monmouth Middle School; Nancy Ludewig, retired third-grade teacher at HLC; Julie Sawtelle, librarian of Cumston Publc Library; and Virgel Hammond, superintendent of RSU 2.

On March 30, after reading 1370 books, the children watched as Mrs. Emery kept her promise as she kissed a “frog,” and we all know that when you kiss a frog it will turn into a handsome prince.
