The Mount Blue Regional School District’s public presentations for the 2012-13 proposed budget are coming soon. As a member of the district’s support staff, I feel it is important to publicly comment on the support staff portion of the coming year’s budget.

MBRSD support staff personnel (bus drivers, bus driver/custodians, bus aides, custodians, education technicians, maintenance, mechanics, duty monitors, security and school secretaries) have been working without a contract since June 30, 2011, and with wage freezes for two years running.

In addition, mandatory unpaid leave days have been incurred. The idea of contracting custodial and transportation services is still being floated, and progress in negotiating a mutually agreeable successor contract has been agonizingly slow.

Now voting approaches on yet another school budget.

Despite those discouraging factors, that group of dedicated employees has faithfully, skillfully and professionally continued to take pride in their roles for providing a quality environmental for the education of the children in our schools.

They are worthy of the community’s respect and support for the hardworking and responsible members of our community that they are.

I am very proud to be part of the team that serves the needs of the children entrusted to our care.

Cathy Ibarguen, Farmington, MBRSD school secretary
