GILEAD — A handful of residents unanimously approved a school budget of $229,931 for its 30 or so pupils at a special town meeting last week.
Town Clerk Lin Chapman said the town, which is not a member of a school district, holds a contract with SAD 44 to send its elementary and secondary students to the Bethel district.
Last year, the town paid SAD 44 $231,720 for educating its students.
Chapman said with the school budget now known, and the municipal budget of $279,774 approved late last month, selectmen are likely to set the tax rate within the next few weeks. The town’s share of the Oxford County taxes isn’t known yet.
The current tax rate is $15.40 per $1,000 valuation.
The municipal budget jumped about $78,000 because of a planned property revaluation and reconstruction of a 1,300-foot section of the North Road.
Chapman said tax bills will likely be mailed this summer because the town is working on the taxes of several properties. Once bills go out, they are due in 30 days without penalty.
In another matter, she said residents may again register their vehicles at the town office beginning May 1. For the past few weeks, residents have had to travel to Greenwood for the service.
