FARMINGTON – Robert Sepanek of Vienna, a senior at Mt. Blue High School, won first place in the State of Maine Lions club Region 6 Speak Out public speaking competition held March 28 at UMF North dining hall. This is the second of the three-level public speaking competition in which students can earn scholarship money and trophies for their participation.

The competition was sponsored in partnership by the Jay Livermore Falls Lions, Wilton Lions and Farmington Lions clubs.

Robert will now go on to the statewide competition and compete against the five other regional champions at the Lions Statewide District 41 convention to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn, April 27-29.

Speak Out requires students to make a speech of approximately five minutes on a topic of their own choosing. Following the speech, students will answer a few questions from a panel of “questioners.”

Students are scored on the presentation of their speech, public speaking skills and their ability to answer questions related to the speech topic.

Robert competed against two other club level winners, Emily Rice from Mt. Blue High School and Lindsey Ryder from Spruce Mountain High School, South Campus.

Robert’s topic of choice was his love of the piano and his sense of accomplishment for challenging himself with taking up the piano within the last three years.
