NORWAY — The newly-formed United for Dogs group met March 27 at the Norway Town Office. Shirley Boyce, president of Responsible Pet Care, welcomed almost 20 dog lovers interested in helping with dogs housed at RPC. People attended from the immediate area towns, along with Buckfield, Bridgton, Milton and Rumford.

Several members have trained to walk dogs during the evening shift at RPC, and another has begun helping with administrative duties.

The group’s focus remains on shelter needs and location, having a dog park, fostering, dog walking, general volunteering and fundraising. Within these areas, ideas were shared concerning procedures for dog walking and fostering, need for an outside fenced area at RPC, identifying dog-friendly businesses and upcoming fundraisers.

On Saturday, April 21, RPC will hold its Chinese auction fundraiser and needs donations. Two dates have been secured for tollbooth fundraisers: May 12, which is during Be Kind to Animals Week, and Oct. 13, which is during National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

Also during the weekend of May 12 and 13, the Androscoggin Pet Expo will take place at the Lewiston Armory, and the group plans a presence there.

On May 19, RPC will hold a plant sale at the Norway Town Office from 9 a.m. to noon. Anyone who wants to donate plants is asked to have them potted, identified and ready to sell. They may be left at the town office during the week before the sale.

The next meeting of the group will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at the Norway Town Office. For more information call Helen at 743-1193 or Jackie at 743-7152.
