STRONG — A small, older camper located off Route 4 near Devil’s Elbow burned late Friday afternoon leaving a man and two large dogs homeless.

The cause of the fire is uncertain, Strong Fire Deputy Chief Ian Shamp said at the scene. Forest Ranger Mark Rousseau and Shamp were investigating and believed the fire started inside the camper and spread to the wooded area surrounding it.

The unidentified man ran hollering fire, fire and calling for his dogs, said neighbor Douglas Chick. He heard him, saw the camper was in flames and called 911 at about 5:20 p.m., Chick said at the scene.

Along with Strong Fire Department, mutual aid arrived from Farmington and Phillips, Shamp said.
