MEXICO — Selectmen on Tuesday approved the addition of eight questions — including whether to allow the sale of fireworks and charge higher fees for municipal permits — to the town meeting warrant.

A public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the Town Hall on those questions, as well as on the 14 articles that make up the proposed $3 million municipal budget for 2012-13.

The Planning Board recommended three of the questions, two dealing with fireworks and one to raise permit fees, Town Manager John Madigan said.

The nonbinding fireworks articles will ask residents whether they want to allow the sale of fireworks in town and whether residents want to restrict the use of fireworks.

Madigan said the results of the straw poll would help the Planning Board devise an ordinance governing the use of fireworks. Before the wording is finalized, Madigan said he wants the Maine Municipal Association to review the rules.

The Planning Board is also recommending higher fees for such things as mobile home parks, taxicab licenses, junkyards, building permits, photocopies and several other municipal-related permits. Such fees have not been raised for many years.

Residents will also be asked whether they want to enter into an agreement with neighboring Rumford for the purchase of a ladder truck that would be used by both fire departments. Selectmen from both towns met April 12 to work out an agreement.

Other warrant articles include one asking for authorization for the town to purchase a parcel on Alder Street with construction funds, another requesting approval to accept a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant, and one that would increase the amount of money allowed by state law to be raised at town meeting.

A traditional town meeting is no longer held in Mexico. Instead, residents will vote by referendum on June 12.

In other matters, the board approved a toll road fundraiser for the Mountain Valley Eagles Girls’ Traveling Basketball teams, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 12 on Main Street near Big Daddy’s Buff and Wax.

They also approved the installation of a stop sign at the intersection of Osgood Avenue and Oak Street. The action came following a 10-minute public hearing on the matter when two residents complained of speeding vehicles driving along Osgood Avenue.
