ORONO — The Black Bears broke things open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth as they defeated St. Joseph’s College 5-0 in softball action Wednesday.
The Monks (30-7) threatened in the top of the fourth as a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with just on out. But, Black Bear (12-26-1) starter Ashley Kelley and the defense came up big, getting a pair of fielder’s choices to end the threat.
With one run in and the bases loaded, EmJ Fogel ripped a line drive into left field to score a pair of runs. Lindsey Jenkins scored on the same sequence of plays as the throw to the catcher went awry.
Baseball
UMass 11, Maine 5
AMHERST, Mass. — The Minutemen scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break the game open as the University of Massachusetts finished the day with an 11-5 victory over the University of Maine in baseball action Wednesday.
Michael Fransoso led off the game with a triple for the Black Bears (21-17), and scored on a feilder’s choice.
The Minutemen took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third, just to have the game knotted at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Justin Leisenheimer produced a triple for Maine in the scoring foray.
Amherst exploded for five runs in the fifth and never looked back.
Men’s lacrosse
Colby 5, Bates 3
WATERVILLE — Five different players scored as Colby secured a 5-3 victory over Bates College in men’s lacrosse action Wednesday.
The Mules (9-4) took a halftime margin of 3-0 when first-year attacker Chip Grossman scored on a dish by James Wyse. Rob Highland put the Bobcats on the board with 12:23 remaining in the third quarter on a conversion from Kyle Starr.
Colby took a 5-1 lead before Conor Henrie and Highland responded late in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Husson, Bates split
LEWISTON — Bates and Husson split a doubleheader by trading 6-5 decisions in softball action Wednesday.
Sophomore Alayna Garbarino hit a towering fly ball that landed barely over the fence and just inside the left-field foul pole for a three-run home run in the first inning of Game 2, keying the Bobcat’s (17-10) win in the nightcap.
Lona Sargent hit her first homer of the season in Game 1 for the Eagles (29-10), a two-run shot that gave Husson a 6-1 pivotal lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Bates came back for four runs in the bottom of the frame, but Husson had the edge it needed.
Women’s lacrosse
Colby 10, Bates 8
LEWISTON — Colby ran off four straight goals down the stretch to secure a 10-8 triumph over Bates in the women’s lacrosse regular-season finale Wednesday.
Lindsey McKenna scored three goals for the Mules (13-1).
Joan O’Neill scored three times and assisted on another for the Bobcats (7-7). The NESCAC’s leading scorer finished the regular season with a career-high 50 goals.
