FARMINGTON — A garage for the Farmington Police Department may become a reality sooner than expected.

Selectmen unanimously agreed Tuesday to accept an offer to fund the garage and seek bids to determine what it will cost, Town Manager Richard Davis said.

In a most generous move, Davis said, Richard Bjorn has offered to fund the cost above what taxpayers agreed to put in a reserve account for the garage at the March town meeting.

The department asked voters to approve $75,000 for the garage at the new station on Franklin Avenue but voters chose to go along with selectmen and start a reserve account with $25,000.

In other business, the board unanimously agreed to more fully consider a request to amend wind energy performance standards added to the town’s zoning ordinance last month by voters at town meeting.

Dr. Burton Knapp spoke to residents at town meeting concerning the need to reduce sound limits and setback requirements listed within the ordinance, but voters decided to adopt the standards.

While supporting the need for a wind-power ordinance, Knapp previously stated the ordinance does not do enough to protect residents from the noise of wind turbines. Noise levels at property lines could average 60 decibels, as the ordinance is written, he said.

Knapp and a few concerned residents appeared before the board Tuesday to ask for amendments to the ordinance, Davis said.

The board agreed to ask the Code Enforcement Office to research and write the amendments and bring them back for the board to consider.

Following a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed change to the town’s traffic ordinance, the board voted down a request that would have limited the parking time to 20 minutes for three parking spaces in front of Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street, he said.
