LEWISTON — The Western Maine Labor Council will host the sixth annual Workers Memorial Day Dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Franco-American Heritage Center on Cedar Street.

Workers Memorial Day is internationally recognized as a day to commemorate workers who have died on the job. May Day has been the international holiday of the working class since workers fought for the eight-hour work shift in this country in the late 1800s.

This year’s dinner will include a photo exhibit from Guy Saldanha, an artist whose photographs have captured the essence of working people at their jobs throughout the country. Guest speakers are Rachel Desgrosseilliers, executive director of Museum L-A, and Bill Murphy of the University of Maine, who will talk about the connection between labor and safety practices.

The dinner will be catered by Davinci’s Eatery, and the evening will include a ceremonial reading of names of workers who died in Maine on the job in 2011.

To reserve a ticket, contact Joe Mailey at 786-3750. Tickets are $15 and may also be purchased at the door.

The Western Maine Labor Council represents 5,500 union workers in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, with a focus on working to promote economic equality and fairness to workers, safe workplaces and worker rights.
