PARIS — Selectmen voted Friday to shorten the nomination process for filling former Selectman Kenneth West’s seat.
The move will allow voters to choose his replacement at the June 12 election, the same day they choose someone for the three-year position held by Selectman Jean Smart.
Shortening the nomination process from the normal 85 days will save the town hundreds or perhaps thousands of dollars for a special election, Town Clerk Elizabeth Knox said.
Nomination papers are available at the Town Office for the one year left on West’s term. He resigned Monday, saying he no longer had time to serve. Paper ballots will be used and counted by hand, because there won’t be enough time to create ballots for the voting machines.
In other business Friday, the board failed to approve the town budget and scheduled a special meeting for May 3 to discuss it further.
A discussion on the budget was hung up on a change to the way the town calculates tax revenues.
Selectman Ted Kurtz said he believed revenues for fiscal year 2012-13, which begins, July 1, would mean a $1.38 increase in the tax rate over this year.
Town Bookkeeper Marjorie Risica said the town had improved the way it calculates revenues since last year, and the 2012-13 revenue estimate reflected that change, while the 2011-12 revenue reflected the way it was calculated in the past. Risica said recalculating last year’s figures the new way would be too time-consuming.
Kurtz remained doubtful and voted against approving the Budget Committee’s recommended budget until he could speak with Risica next week.
The budget needed three votes to pass. With West off the board and Ryan Lorrain unable to attend due to his job in the Maine House of Representatives, the vote was 2 in favor of passage and one against.
The board will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the Town Office.
