Rarely does a top page headline rile me as the front page of the Sun Journal on April 27 did.

To suggest that a retired U.S. Air Force colonel speaks for us all, or has the only correct opinion, could not be further from the truth. As a retired U.S. Navy fighter pilot and captain, I can state categorically that freedom doesn’t come free.

It is especially disconcerting that someone such as Col. Mauzaka should feel as he does. Nevertheless he is free to express such an opinion in some large measure because our service men and women are willing to put themselves in harm’s way to defend his right to such opinions.

Proficiency at flying high performance aircraft doesn’t just happen. It requires ongoing practice in as close to real scenarios as possible.

Col. Mauzaka’s attitude smacks of the all too common phenomenon of “NIMBY.” The rare and very brief noise associated with these proposed training flights seems to me a small price for us to pay for our unique life of freedom here in the greatest nation ever created.

I enjoy seeing (and hearing) “the sound of freedom” and support it wholeheartedly.
