I echo Oxford County Treasurer Roy Gedat’s call for civility in politics: “. . . respectful discourse, absent of personal attacks with the best interests of taxpayers always in the forefront.” (April 24)

In recent years, I have noticed a disturbing lack of civility in political discourse that only seems to grow worse. Does that mean it is what people want, or what has been inflicted on them?

Here is my vote for a more respectful tone in 2012, regardless of subject. Democracy isn’t about all of us agreeing. It is about our ability to debate freely.

So, let us debate and disagree, but always remember this is Maine, which was recently designated the most peaceful state in the nation.
