FARMINGTON — Patients and staff were evacuated from a Farmington nursing home Sunday afternoon after a fire broke out in the facility’s laundry room.

Farmington fire Lt. Tim Hardy said the blaze broke out about 3:18 p.m. Sunday at the Sandy River Center on Route 133, also known as Livermore Falls Road. Hardy said officials believe an industrial dryer in facility’s laundry room malfunctioned and caught fire.

He said the fire was contained to the laundry room area thanks to the nursing center’s sprinkler system. Crews arrived on scene within minutes and put out the fire inside the dryer.

Hardy said 81 patients were evacuated as a result of the blaze. All residents were able to return to their rooms by Sunday evening except for those living in the wing where the laundry room is located. He said that section of the building sustained smoke and water damage. Displaced residents were moved to other areas of the facility while crews cleaned up.

Hardy said about 60 firefighters from Farmington, Wilton, Jay, Strong, Chesterville, East Dixfield, Temple and New Sharon arrived on scene to assist.
