LEWISTON — L.L. Bean will open the doors to its manufacturing facilities later this month for a tour led by Museum L-A. The tour is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23 and costs $40 per person.

The tour begins and ends at the Museum L-A, 35 Canal St., with a rented motor coach.

Tour stops include the company’s Brunswick factory, where Bean’s most iconic products — the Maine Hunting Shoe, Bean Boot and the Boat and Tote Bag — are made.

It continues with lunch stop in Freeport. Tourgoers can either pack a lunch or visit restaurants there.

The tour continues at the company’s Lewiston factory and the boot-bottom molding operation. That leg of the tour will be led by Senior Manufacturing Vice President Jack Samson.

People taking the tour will be asked to wear comfortable, flat, sneaker-style shoes or work boots and safety glasses. Glasses will be provided on site.

Museum L-A began offering the tours last year. It started with visits to Lewiston-based Rancourt and Co. Shoecrafters on Bridge Street and Pamco Shoe Machinery on Beech Street and Falcon Performance Footwear, near the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport in Auburn.

The next tour went to the Lufthansa Technik project at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport to see restoration work on one of 55-year-old Lockheed Super Constellation airplane.
