RUMFORD — In the 1960s, Neil Simon sat down to write a play destined to become a classic. “The Odd Couple” is the well-known story of two roommates: a divorced, slovenly easygoing character and a separated, hypochondriac neat-freak.

The show opened on Broadway in 1965, starring Walter Matthau as Oscar Madison and Art Carney as Felix Unger. In the 1970s, the story became a staple of television, starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall and running for five years.

Now, Unger and Madison are at it again — Olive Madison and Florence Unger, that is, in Neil Simon’s contemporary comic classic, “The Odd Couple (Female Version),” to be staged May 11-13 by the Paper Moon Players. The show is the newly formed troupe’s debut.

Instead of the opening poker party in the “The Odd Couple,” Olive has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers, but the humor remains the same.

Cast in the show, directed by Keith A. Grassette with assistance from Melissa Hope Fallon, are Lisa Picard as Olive, Kristin Guay as Florence, Laurie Hunt as Mickey, Margaret Donaghue as Vera, Diane Paterson as Renee, Becca Garlick as Sylvie, Ross Garlick as Manolo and Dawson Walton as Jesus.

“The Odd Couple (Female Version)” will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 11-12, at Mystic Theater at 49 Franklin; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 13. Doors will open one hour before show time. Light snacks and a limited cash bar will be available. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show.
