DIXFIELD — Work is expected to begin this summer to extend the town’s sewer line 900 feet farther into Mexico to replace old piping to the sewage treatment plant.

Selectmen at Monday night’s special board meeting signed a contract for the sewer extension with the Maine Department of Transportation.

“As soon as we negotiate a price, it will start,” Eugene Skibitsky, town manager, said Tuesday morning.

It involves extending the replacement of old sewer piping from the Blue Moose store to the Peru bridge over the Androscoggin River. Previously, the town replaced sewer piping from the Opera House to the store under the new bridge being built by MDOT over the Webb River on Route 2. The river separates Mexico from Dixfield.

Skibitsky said that over the years the old piping had been repeatedly repaired to the point where it is now considered “fragile.”

“So, now was the time to do it,” he said.

In other business, the board appointed Denise Kidder and Eric Therriault to the Finance Committee for terms ending at town meeting in 2014, and reviewed a draft annual town meeting warrant to be finalized next week.

Additionally, Skibitsky said selectmen unanimously denied a request by some Dixfield residents to use counter space in the Clerk’s Office at the Town Office to pass out information about how Rumford’s wind ordinance would compare with Dixfield’s proposed wind ordinance.

“Since it really had nothing to do with the ordinance that was being voted on, the board refused, and denied the request,” he said.

Upcoming meetings include:

* A public hearing at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, on the proposed wind ordinance written by Selectmen Steve Donahue and Norine Clarke.

* A regular selectmen meeting at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 14, in the Town Office.

* And the annual town meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at Dirigo High School.
