PARIS — An Oxford sex offender with a past sexual assault conviction pleaded guilty to gross sexual assault Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court.

Stephen Ray Gravel, 52, was sentenced to 20 years with all but five years suspended. A revocation of his parole on a previous sexual assault conviction means he’ll serve 12 years total and will be on probation for 20 years after his release.

Gravel was convicted of sexual assault in Oxford County Superior Court in 2008, according to Assistant District Attorney Richard Beauchesne, and had a 1979 sexual misconduct conviction in Kennebec County Superior Court as well. Gravel was a lifetime registrant, according to the Maine Sex Offender Registry.

Gravel was arrested in March on the latest assault. Oxford police said the attack took place March 1.

Justice Robert Clifford said Gravel must go through counseling for sex offenders upon his release.
