(Large ad placed by J.J. Shapiro and Bro.. New Auburn, about two months after a major fire destroyed the Shapiro Block.) We announce with pleasure that we are about to open a store formerly occupied by Albert Bernard at the corner of Third and Broad Streets, as a general store for the sale of such dry goods as we shall be able to carry in a place of that size. We also beg to announce to those who are indebted to us for merchandise on account, that they may settle the account by calling at the store, and that we will send out collectors to interview those who are not able to call at the store. If we are able to collect the large amount due us on our books within the next few weeks we shall start immediately to build a new store, where we can continue to serve the public in the next twenty years as we have in the past.

The Maine Dairy Day parade to be held in Lewiston-Auburn on May 26 will have in it nine bands and drum and bugle corps and floats from 20 industry-associated organizations, according to Herbert M. Waterman of New Gloucester, general chairman of the observance. In addition to the bands, there will be many floats from Granges, 4-H Clubs, dairy groups and breed associations, and other organizations.

Is this type of work in the job description? Not really, say members of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department who spent a good portion of their work days this week transferring police equipment from old cruisers to new cruisers that just arrived. By doing the removal and installation of radios, blue light bars, public address systems, sirens and alternating headlights themselves, instead of hiring outside help, Sheriff’s Department employees could be saving the county about $2,000, Sheriff Roland Gagnon said.
