AUBURN — On May 20, members of the William J. Rogers American Legion Post 153 remembered and honored America’s past veterans by placing flags at Pine Street Cemetery and Beth Jacob Cemetery on Old Danville Road.
With Memorial Day upon us the members of the post wanted to do their part in upholding the 2001 State of Maine law requiring municipalities to purchase and place individual American flags at the gravestone of every veteran buried within the town. Every year local veteran organizations, Boy Scouts, community members and many others participate in this program and every year more help is needed, according to Paul Bernard, public relations officer .
The post plans to participate in the Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 26, followed by an unveiling ceremony of the 23rd Veteran’s Memorial Stone at the Veterans Memorial Park on the Lewiston side of the Governor Longley Bridge.
Anyone interested in placing a veteran’s name on the last two memorial stones for the completion of the first design must contact Moe Dutil at 784-1206 while spaces are still available. The next stone and will be unveiled on Veterans Day and the following Memorial Day will be the last stone for this design, according to Moe Dutil, L&A Veterans Council member.
