I thank the many Mexico people who called, emailed or stopped me when I was out around town, but unless they follow up with a “no” vote on Article 4 on June 12, it will be all talk and no action.

Article 4 is the one that gives the recreation director a $20,000 raise, after being employed only six months.

A second meeting was held and the issue of the raise came up again. The Mexico selectmen could have listened to the taxpayers when a motion was made to not give the raise, but selectmen voted 3-2 to give the raise. Now, it is up to Mexico voters on June 12.

A “no” vote on Article 4 would send a message to those selectmen that the raise is too much. Taxes are already going up this year by 2 mills ($2 for every $1,000 of valuation).

The economy is bad and it is not the time to increase taxes.

For many years, the Greater Rumford Community Center has provided Mexico children with summer recreation for $3,400 per year. We do not need to duplicate those services at such a great expense to the Mexico taxpayers. The GRCC has great programs.

I am not saying that Mexico could not do as well, but not now and at such a big increase in the recreation budget which, by the way, is going up from $23,812 to $53,819 on just salaries.

I support a “no” vote on Article 4 on June 12.
