DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was so sorry to hear of the closing of the Chick-A-Dee Restaurant on Route 4 in Turner, for which I have a gift certificate. I called the Chickadee in Lewiston, but they said that they would not accept it.

Any suggestions on how I might recover the investment? Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can give. — No Name via email

ANSWER: In the Sun Journal story about the closing of the Chick-A-Dee in Turner (http://tinyurl.com/d9bglwg), it says attempts to contact the owner, William Hird Sr., were unsuccessful. Sun Spots did not succeed either.

Unless the owners of a closed business offers to make gift certificates good, options are limited. The costs of small claims court often exceed the value of the gift certificate. If the restaurant declares bankruptcy, you can be part of that proceeding and perhaps get a percentage back.

Unfortunately, the restaurant business is a tough one, and the economy isn’t making it any easier. If you get a gift certificate, don’t dally. Use it as soon as possible.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am interested in contacting a relative of Amy Hickey Daigle, who lived in the Mexico-Rumford area all her life. She was a sister of my mother’s.

I was contacted some years ago by a relative of hers who was looking into the family tree. I could not help her, but would be so interested in her findings. My kids are very interested, so I am trying to help them.

Please email me. I will try to answer any questions. — Margaret Pooler, Casper, Wyo., mpooler@alluretech.net
