NEW GLOUCESTER — A Maine Youth Field Day will be held on Saturday, June 9, at the Royal River Rod and Gun Club, Fish Hatchery Road. Rain date is Sunday, June 10.

The Youth Field Days gives children ages 15 and younger the chance to learn outdoor skills in a safe, structured, fun-filled environment. Recommended minimum age is 10. On-site check in is at 8 a.m. and activities should finish by 1:30 p.m. All activities and lunch are free.

Rod and gun clubs from communities throughout Cumberland County in cooperation with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife are joining together to provide this unique hands-on opportunity.

Children will be taught target shooting skills and safety with .22 caliber rifle, archery, orienteering with map and compass, outdoors safety and wilderness survival, and fishing. All activities will be staffed by certified Range Safety Officers, certified instructors, Maine Guides and other outdoor professionals.

Children will be divided into groups and assigned a guide to escort them from one activity to another during the event. Each group will spend approximately 45 minutes at each activity.

A lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and chips and soda will be provided to all participants, parents and volunteers. A parent or responsible adult must accompany all participating children.

Space is limited to the first 50 applicants. For more information and application forms, call or email Bob Muir, 892-6096, bobm380@yahoo.com; or Aaron Barbour, 749-6737, apbbmx@aol.com. Parental consent is required on the preregistration form.
