Dog obedience class

LEWISTON — Great Falls Dog Obedience Club will begin a six-week dog obedience class starting Wednesday, May 30. Dogs and puppies must be at least 3 1/2 months old and vaccinated. Beginners’ class is at 6:30 and advanced at 7:30. There will be no class on July 4. For more information and to register call the club’s trainer, Diane Harrington, at 784-7578.

Pike Award given

PORTLAND — Good Shepherd Food Bank bestowed Mike Dubyak, chairman and CEO of Wright Express, with the 2012 JoAnn Pike Humanitarian Award at a gala dinner in Portland recently.

More than 240 supporters of Good Shepherd Food Bank gathered at the Holiday Inn by the Bay to celebrate the organization’s efforts to fight hunger in Maine and to honor Dubyak and Wright Express.

The evening began with a reception, followed by dinner in a room set up to look like a food bank warehouse, complete with tall shelving stocked with food that will be distributed to people in need throughout the state. After several speakers and the presentation of awards, Bob Marley capped the evening off with a rousing comedy routine.

The dinner also serves as a fundraising event for the food bank. This year, more than $125,000 was raised thanks to the generosity of numerous sponsors.

Team is fifth in nation

MONMOUTH — Earlier this year The Monmouth Academy Academic Decathlon Team, coached by Cathy Foyt and Scott Foyt, won the State of Maine Small School Championship. By finishing first in Maine, Monmouth Academy earned the opportunity to compete on-line against the other small school champions in the United States.

In a field of 18 other small school state champions, Monmouth finished fifth. Monmouth beat the small school state champions from Colorado, Illinois, New York, Idaho, Utah, Mississippi, New Jersey, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas and Pennsylvania.

Competitors were Matthew Bryant, Mackenzie Kelley, Kristine Kahl, Hayden Koller, Justin Knaus-Tucker, Angela Bechard, Marinna Smith, Kelsey Goentzel and Julia Destefano.

Matt Bryant won a plaque and a $250 scholarship for being high scorer; and Marinna Smith set a school record by winning three individual National medals in economics, art and superquiz.

Club to see chimney swifts

LEWISTON — The Stanton Bird Club of Lewiston/Auburn will meet from 7:45 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 1, to enjoy the spectacle of hundreds of chimney swifts swirling simultaneously into their chimney roost. Leader will Linda Seamans, 240-1380. Meet at Staples, Promenade Mall, Lisbon Street, at 7:45 p.m.

Church plant sale

BOWDOIN — A plant sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at West Bowdoin Baptist Church, 54 West Road.

There will be freshly dug perennials, annuals, herbs, houseplants and vegetables as well as baked goodies and sweet treats. All proceeds go to the West Bowdoin Baptist Church’s Women’s Mission Circle and Building Fund.

Homemakers yard sale

HEBRON — Rain or shine the East Hebron Extension Homemakers will hold a yard sale from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3, at McCafferty’s Greenhouse, Townsend Road, East Hebron.

Money raised helps support the group’s community projects. This year’s activities will include lap robes and clothing protectors for several nursing homes, knit hats for the Dempsey Center and monetary donations to several organizations. Vets ‘office’ at Harley shop

LEWISTON — The Disabled American Veterans “office on wheels” will visit L-A Harley-Davidson from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2.

Local Military Veterans will receive free counseling and assistance with their government benefits from DAV when L-A Harley-Davidson, 839 Main St., hosts Harley’s Heroes.

Since 2007, this program sponsored by The Harley-Davidson Foundation – dubbed Harley’s Heroes – has brought DAV Mobile Service Office to hundreds of dealerships across the country, providing important counseling and assistance to help tens of thousands of veterans and their families secure the benefits to which they earned through service.

DAV National Service Officers, all disabled veterans themselves, will help all veterans with questions about benefits they are eligible for.

Shaker Village activities

NEW GLOUCESTER — A regional group of shape note singers will hold a singing gathering at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2.

The same day, The R & R Spinners will hold their monthly demonstration of skills and creations beginning at 10 a.m.

Both events are free and open to the public.

A Calligraphic Card Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will learn how to make uniquely personalized notecards and envelopes with beautiful handwriting, pressed flowers, Shaker herbs and watercolors.The fee is $40; preregistration required.
