CANTON — The town has paid $518,491 so far for the dam over Whitney Brook, an outlet for Lake Anasagunticook, according to Dam Advisory Committee Secretary Judy Hamilton.
The total project, which is being built by Bowman Constructors, of Jefferson, is expected to cost $630,000.
The town received a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to build the dam. Previous payments have come from the grant and the Lake Association. Some pledges from the Lake Association are still to be collected, so there is presently a shortfall. The final invoice for $44,854 is pending.
A town warrant article in June will ask for approval to sell some portions of the dam property, which could provide the final payment for the dam.
Once the appointments to the new inter-local committee are made, the new committee will be charged with regular dam inspections, maintenance and operation. Malcolm Ray has been in charge of monitoring the water level.
Th inter-local committee will be made up of residents of both Canton and Hartford. There are approximately 140 homes or camps with water frontage and two-thirds of those are in Hartford.
The final design for cleaning up the dam area is taking shape under the direction of Wilks Harper, brownfields manager for the state Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP grant will cover most of the cost of paving the parking lot, access road, paths, pads and riprap. The project will include a cover system for contaminated soil on property the town could sell.
Final designs will be shared with Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, which is installing a boat ramp.
An onsite walk-through for prospective contractors for the cleanup will be scheduled and the bids will be considered at the July 12 selectman meeting.
