FARMINGTON — More than $4,000 was raised under chilly bright sunny skies this spring when more than 180 runners, both adults and children, gathered for the first Run to Prevent Child Abuse hosted by the Franklin County Children’s Task Force.

The 8:30 a.m. bell sounded for the Kids Fun Run to begin and almost 50 young children made their trek around the block down the finish line shoot to receive their own medals and ice cream cone gift certificates.

At 9 a.m. 5K and 10K runners lined up on Anson Street. The last runner crossed the finish line in just over 90 minutes. Raffle winners were chosen, food was eaten and shoppers browsed the wares of local spandex retailers Kelly Cullenburg and Sara Doszinsky.

For those runners needing to loosen strained muscles Serenity Massage offered free massages while Vortex Nutrition handed out free shakes to all the participants.

“This was exactly what we wanted to see” said executive director Renee Blanchet, “families getting together, being healthy and recognizing that strengthening their families is the number one way to reduce child maltreatment.”

Top 10 finishers in the 5K were first, John Buys, Palmyra; second, John Logan, Farmington; third, Steve Lamontagne, Auburn; fourth, Judith Lewald, Kingfield; fifth, Jon Richardson, Bridgton; sixth, Katie Paddock, Avon; seventh, Jennifer Boudreau, no town listed; eighth, Shlya Bridges, no town listed; ninth, Rebecca Capozza, Farmington; 10th, Peter Couture, Farmington.
