WATERVILLE — Already in uncharted territory for a tennis player from St. Dom’s, Zach DeBlois had nothing to lose in facing the No. 2 overall seed Saturday in the 2012 MPA singles tournament.

“The goal really was to last as long as he could, and go out there and give it his all,” St. Dom’s coach Kevin Cullen said of DeBlois. “No matter what, the hope was to get to the round of 16 this year, and he accomplished that.”

DeBlois’ stay in the third round was a rather short one, though.

He fell, 6-1, 6-0, to No. 2 seed Justin Brogan in Saturday’s first round, the third of the tournament, in a little less than an hour.

“I’ve been here five year now,” Cullen said, “And this is the furthest we’ve had a player make it in the tournament since I’ve been here.”

DeBlois reached Saturday’s third round with a pair of wins Friday, the first over Zacharia Harvey of Houlton, and the second over Lewiston’s Brett Vallee.

“He played smart in that match,” Cullen said. “When Brett would make a mistake, he’d take advantage of it.”

Brogan, of Falmouth, held his seed through a second match Saturday, taking care of Waynflete freshman Isaac Salas, 6-0, 6-0. There, he will face No. 3 Matt Gilman of Cape Elizabeth, who rolled through Alex Henny of Scarborough and No. 11 Sam Leeman of Morse to reach the semifinals.

Defending champion Patrick Ordway of Waynflete, the No. 1 seed, defeated Jai Aslam of Messalonskee and No. 9 Satchel McCarthy of Cape Elizabeth to reach his semifinal, where he will face Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Tyler Adams of Bonny Eagle.

In the girls’ draw, top-seeded Maisie Silverman of Brunswick rolled to the semifinals with a pair of straight-set wins over caribou’s Ashley Richards and Waterville’s Colleen O’Donnell. She’ll face Olivia Leavitt of Falmouth, the No. 5 seed, who ousted Emma Blakeley of Camden Hills and Wendy Goldman of Hall-Dale.

Leavitt’s teammates, No. 2 Annie Criscione and No. 3 Analise Kump, held seed as well, and will square off in the other girls’ semifinal.

The semifinal round will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Colby College.
