OXFORD — Roger Jackson of Oxford is running for the Maine House of Representatives this fall as the Republican candidate.

Jackson, a member of the Oxford Board of Selectmen, is aiming to replace Maine Rep. James Hamper. Hamper can no longer run for the seat due to term limits and is pursuing a seat in the Maine Senate.

Jackson is the only Republican candidate on the June 12 primary ballot for District 100, which includes Oxford, Otisfield and Mechanic Falls.

He served in the Army and is a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War. He also worked as a guidance counselor for U.S. Army recruiting. After retiring from the Army, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Buckfield. He served several terms as president of the Maine Rural Letter Carrier’s Association.

Jackson runs a farm and has a maple sugar house. He was recently reappointed to the Maine Maple Industry Task Force, a commission of Maine maple syrup producers founded last year. He was a member of the Oxford Budget Committee before he was elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2007.

Jackson had three children with his wife, Rose Jackson, who passed away in 2010.

He said he wants to balance the needs of business with environmental controls without harming either. Jackson also said he wants to pursue welfare reform.

On Friday, Jackson said he wants to bring his experience in town government to the House of Representatives.
