BANGOR — A Franklin County man was sentenced Tuesday to more than three years in prison on a federal gun charge.
U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II reported Tuesday that Joseph Smith, 66, of Township 6 North of Weld was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor to 41 months in prison and three years supervised release for possessing three sawed-off shotguns. Smith pleaded guilty in December 2011 to the charge.
Delahanty’s office reported the guns were discovered during a September 2010 search of Smith’s camp in northern Franklin County. The joint investigation involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
At the time, authorities found three firearms made from shotguns with barrel lengths of less than 18 inches in Smith’s possession. The guns were not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
