Post to note original Memorial Day

LEWISTON — The George Armstrong Custer Post 7, Grand Army of the Republic Association, will celebrate the original Memorial Day, as set after the Civil War, at noon Wednesday, May 30, at the grave of Stephen Marriner, Riverside Cemetery, Main Street.

Marriner died in 1864 in a Confederate Prison in South Carolina.

The program will open with an invocation by Douglas Taylor and singing of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” by those assembled.

The Gen. John Logan Order 11, setting May 30, 1868, as Memorial Day, will be read as will Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The Custer Post history will be related followed by the singing of “God Bless America.”

The service will be held rain or shine.

Shaker Village activities

NEW GLOUCESTER — A regional group of shape note singers will hold a singing gathering at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2.

The same day, the R & R Spinners will hold their monthly demonstration of skills and creations beginning at 10 a.m.

Both events are free and open to the public.

A calligraphic card workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will learn how to make uniquely personalized notecards and envelopes with handwriting, pressed flowers, Shaker herbs and watercolors.The fee is $40; preregistration is required.

Maps exhibit at history barn

NEW GLOUCESTER — “New Gloucester Maps” is the title of the new exhibit at the New Gloucester History Barn, Intervale Road, (Route 231), that will be featured at the next monthly open house to be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 2. The exhibit will show previously undiscovered Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps of New Gloucester in 1892, 1907 and 1927. Admission is free and the public is invited. Sponsored by the New Gloucester Historical Society.

Trip to Von Trapp Lodge

LISBON — The Scarlet O’Hatters, Red Hatters of the Lisbon area, will take a trip to the Von Trapp family lodge in Stowe, Vt., on June 13 and 14. The movie “The Sound of Music” is based on their lives.

Seats are still available, but limited. The bus leaves Exit 80 at 8 a.m. June 13 and returns at 6 p.m. June 14.

Seniors plan meal, meeting

SABATTUS — The Sabattus Seniors will have a meal at the China Buffet on East Avenue, Lewiston, on Thursday, June 7. Doors open at 11 a.m. Cost, including meal, beverage and tip, will be $9; this is the regular buffet not the discounted one. To sign up, call Betty at 946-7595 or Pauline at 375-4037. Deadline to call in for meals is Sunday, June 3. Following the meal the meeting will be held at the Maxwell Hall at 1 p.m. Bingo will be played after.

Quit smoking helpers’ program

LEWISTON — The Dempsey Center and Healthy Androscoggin are offering the Maine Helpers Program, learning to help others quit tobacco.

The training will be conducted by Maureen Higgins, cancer health outreach educator at the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, Vicky Wiegman, substance abuse counselor/coordinator for Lewiston Public Schools, and Emily Dooling, tobacco coordinator at Healthy Androscoggin. All three are certified helpers trainers.

Worksite wellness coordinators, human resource and employee health personnel, clergy, friends and family members of tobacco users would all benefit from the program.

The training will take place at Healthy Androscoggin, 130 East Ave., from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays, June 5 and 12. Participants must attend both dates to become certified.

Although there is no cost, preregistration is required by Monday, June 4. To register, call Healthy Androscoggin at 795-5990.

Seniors meeting

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens membership meeting will be Monday, June 4, not June 7 as listed on the cover of the June newsletter. The meeting will be at 1 p.m. in the Seniors Room at the Multi-Purpose Center.

This will be the last meeting before summer and the move to the Lewiston Armory.

Annual blood drive

AUBURN — Central Maine Orthopaedics has announced the third annual blood drive with the American Red Cross from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 6.

The blood drive will take place aboard the Red Cross bus, which will be parked in the rear parking lot behind the CMO facility. The drive will be open to the public.

Back pain presentation

LEWISTON (with two mugs) — “Back Pain: Is Surgery the Answer?” is the topic of a free special presentation from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, in the Chairmen’s Rooms, on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building on the Central Maine Medical Center campus.

Orthopaedic surgeon Michael F. Regan and physical therapist Jason Burtchell will discuss the surgical and nonsurgical treatment of back pain.

Regan says the June 5 program will be informative not only for those who have diagnosed back problems, but also for individuals experiencing leg, neck or arm pain or numbness and/or tingling in their extremities.
