GRAY, Maine (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings across much of Maine and parts of New Hampshire as heavy rains continue falling across the region.

A flood warning has been issued for the Saco River near Conway, N.H., as well as the Swift, Presumpscot and Kennebec rivers in Maine.

Rain was continuing Sunday following Saturday’s drenching that dropped more than 5 inches in places.

The weather service says more than 5 inches were recorded in Durham, Windham, Gray and Cumberland in a 26-hour period.

Portland received a record 3.63 inches of rain on Saturday, the fourth-wettest day recorded in June in 141 years of record-keeping.

Rain resulted in potentially dangerous conditions and forced postponement of the pole vault competition during Saturday’s Class A state track and field championship meet at Windham High School.

A spokeswoman for the Brunswick International Fly-In says many pilots skipped the event Saturday because they feared getting stranded at the aircraft show.

Last year, more than 300 aircraft participated, but this year only a few airplanes and a helicopter had arrived by afternoon.
