I attended all of the public meetings which informed the development of Lewiston’s Riverfront Island master plan. They were some of the most exciting public planning meetings I have attended in quite some time.

Attendance was large and consistent. People were passionate and represented many different groups in the community. This was an exemplary public process and we have a very useful document to show for it.

Some of the key recommendations are focused on extending the Riverwalk, connecting green spaces, enhancing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and improving Simard/Payne Memorial Park (formerly Railroad Park).

That is a wonderful park that has been limited by its hidden location. Nonetheless, it has served major events such as the Dempsey Challenge and the Balloon Festival.

It also sits adjacent to the future home of Museum L-A.

With improved entrances and access to trails and the water, Simard/Payne Park will be a critical anchor to the redevelopment of Riverfront Island. And Riverfront Island will be a critical anchor for the economic revitalization of Lewiston.

The plan has received tremendous public support, so far, but it will take continued public support to become a reality.
