LEWISTON — Lewiston Elks Lodge 371 will hold its annual Flag Day service at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 10,  at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave.

The event commemorates the 235th anniversary of the adoption of the Flag of the United States of America as the official flag, signed into law by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

All are welcome to attend the tribute to the American Flag.

The event will begin with a ceremony performed by the officers and members of the Lewiston Elks Lodge, with assistance from several other community and veteran organizations. The ceremony will include music and a history of the flag.

Speakers include Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald, Exalted Ruler Kathleen Cotterly, Franco-American War Veterans Commander Willie Danforth and representatives from the offices of Chellie Pingree, Michael Michaud and Olympia Snowe.

Following the service, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony outside the armory for a new flag pole and bench, which will be donated to the city by the Elks Lodge and several other local organizations. Following the groundbreaking, light refreshments will be served in the armory.

The Elks is a patriotic organization dedicated to promoting Americanism, support of the nation’s youth, veterans and charity.
