LEWISTON — Florence Rose Martin, who teaches a weekly class at the Center for Wisdom’s Women on making rosette quilts, has donated a quilt for a raffle to benefit the center.

Sometimes called button or yo-yo quilts, they are made of little rosettes that are sewn together, in a side-by-side fashion. The rosettes are pieces of fabric gathered into a circle. Some are laid out to form a specific pattern, but the more common style are a jumbled combination of fabric collected from every facet of one’s life. Yo-yo quilts were popular during the ’30s and ’40s.

The donated quilt is made of 1,512 rosettes cut and stitched from 18 yards of fabric. It is backed in rose color cotton. Martin said it took her 134 hours to make. Martin is at the center most Thursday mornings.

The raffle will run through November. Chances are $2 each or $5 for three, $10 for seven, and $20 for 15 and may be obtained at the Center for Wisdom’s Women any weekday morning. The center is located at 97 Blake St. (between Pine and Ash), behind Healy Terrace.
