USM LGBT Collection open house

PORTLAND — The USM LGBT Collection will hold its annual open house from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, June 13, in Special Collections, 6th floor, Glickman Family Library, USM Portland.

Scheduled for the 20th anniversary of his death, this year’s open house is dedicated to Vietnam veteran Ron McClinton. After being diagnosed with AIDS, McClinton moved to Maine in 1988. Over the next four years, he continued to serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and allied communities by founding the Matlovich Society in Portland.

Peace Fair seeks nominations

BRUNSWICK — Every August at the Greater Brunswick Peace Fair, an award is given in recognition of someone in the community whose work has contributed to making the world we live in more just and compassionate.

The Peace Fair Planning Committee is seeking nominations for the 2012 award from within the local community. The committee is seeking to honor people who have used their creativity and energy to build a world with greater hope and respect for others.

Send nominations by June 20, with a brief description of what it is that leads you to nominate this person, to Peace Works at PO Box 652 or by email at [email protected]. The committee will select the award recipient who will be recognized at the opening ceremony of the Peace Fair on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Last year the fair honored John Dennen for his persistent outreach regarding the care of those caught up in the African AIDS pandemic, as well as Mary Beth Sullivan for her peace-building work with the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space.
