1930 – 2012

TURNER — Norman Joseph Marquis, 82, of Turner, died peacefully Friday, June 8, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and loyal dog, Spirit.

He was born June 3, 1930, in the small, northern town of Woodland. Norm was the son of Henry and Deniege (Guerrett) Marquis.

He was educated in the Auburn School District and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1948. During this time, he was employed at Bates Mill in Lewiston.

Following his high school graduation, Norm served several years in the U.S. Army. Sgt. Norm served in the Korean War from 1952-1954.

After his military service, Norm returned to Lewiston, and on June 12, 1954, he married Theresa L. Boisvert. The couple celebrated 58 wonderful years together. In 1969, Norm and Terry moved to Little Wilson Pond to remodel their cottage and raise their five children.

Norm worked at several local shoe factories in the Lewiston area. He made many friendships during his 27 years at Knapp Shoe. He then changed his career and worked for the Lewiston Sun-Journal as a self-contractor. With Terry by his side, they traveled over 200 miles nightly delivering newspapers to the Bethel area. After 23 years with the Sun-Journal, Norm finally retired in 1996 to spend time with his family and friends.

Norm had a love for life. He enjoyed the simple things: fishing, hunting, daily walks with his Boxers (Major, Keizer, Dutchess, & Spirit), watching the Red Sox, bowling, playing cribbage with his brothers (Dennis and Donald), gathering his firewood and spending time camping at Mount Blue and Sebago with his wife. Above all, Norman enjoyed spending time with his loving wife, his five children, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His strength, courage, love of life, sense of humor and mischievous smile will be missed by all.

Norman is survived by Theresa, his wife of 58 years; daughter, Susan and husband, Joe Conroy, of Hartford; son, Ronald Marquis of Turner; daughter, Donna and husband, Ken Bates, of Turner; daughter, Nancy (Marquis) Brown of Turner; son, Michael Marquis and wife, Pamela, of Auburn; 12 grandchildren, Sgt. James Ellis III; Joey, Shara and John Marquis; Jennifer, Ken and Matt Bates; Tiffany Brown and Zachary Levesque; Michael, Lizzy and Viki Marquis. Three great-grandchildren, Jamison Ellis, Morgan Bates and Marshall Bates; three brothers, Henry and Betty Marquis of Massachusetts, Donald and Anita Marquis of Jay, Dennis and Helene Marquis of Warren, and a sister, Greta Chabot of Poland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Daniel; his parents, Henry and Deneige; brother Armand; and sister-in-law Rachel.
