OXFORD — Veteran drivers Travis Stearns and David Tripp earned feature wins in their respective divisions Saturday evening, as Oxford Plains Speedway completed another championship points program.
Stearns drove to victory in the caution-filled 40-lap Late Model battle, while Tripp powered his way to top honors in the 30-lap Strictly Stock tussle.
Fred Clavet, Kyle Treadwell and Matt Moore were also feature winners on an absolutely beautiful night for stock car racing.
Longtime Oxford veteran Al Hammond led the first lap in Late Model action as a huge 29-car field took the green flag. Dave Farrington Jr. powered his way around the outside of Hammond in short order and took over the point at lap two in convincing fashion.
Farrington would control most the race, surviving numerous restarts and challenges from both Matt Sanborn and Chris Coolidge. Each time, Farrington’s superior chassis setup kept him out front. That is until Stearns got aggressive on the final circuit. Disappointed, Farrington settled for second, while two-time champion Timmy Brackett claimed third. Shawn Knight and Shane Green completed the top five.
“We had the worst practice session of the season thus far,” Stearns said. “I was crying and carrying on like a little schoolgirl. Yet, my team made all the right changes. The car was super fast and handled well the entire race. I have to thank Mitch at Crazy Horse Racing. This is a brand new car and with his hard work and guidance. We’re starting to see the performance we were after with this chassis. It feels awesome to be back in Victory Lane in a solid car after running a part-time schedule in recent years.”
Tripp took the lead from Mike Roe at lap three and cruised to a convincing win. The driver from Oxford had one close call at lap 24 as he worked through slower traffic. Tripp “threaded the needle” between two lapped cars, yet came through without any trouble. It was the only bump in his winning effort.
“I have to thank my crew for this one,” Tripp said. “We wrecked this thing the last time out. They worked their butts off to get it back together, and they did a fabulous job. This feels pretty awesome.”
In earlier feature action, Clavet notched a wire-to-wire victory in the first of two 20-lap battles for the Outlaw division. The driver from Buckfield broke away from the field early with Turner’s John Patria in tow. Patria hung on for second, while Deanna Bisbee drove from seventh on the grid to secure third. Scott Veinott and Steve Moon completed the top five in a caution-free affair.
“I haven’t been around much for the last two years,” Clavet said. “I’ve been involved as a car owner, but just haven’t been behind the wheel for a long time. It’s good to know I haven’t forgotten how to drive. It sure feels great to win. This is a very competitive division.”
Treadwell claimed the second Outlaw feature by holding off a hard-charging Josh Childs. The hot-shoe from Auburn chased down early leader Matt Dufault at halfway and hung on for top honors. Childs slipped sideways coming off turn 4 on the final lap yet salvaged second, while Addison Bowie finished third. Mike Haynes and Troy Jordan rounded out the top five.
“I need to apologize to Josh right away. My car washed up the track and I didn’t mean to get into him,” Treadwell said. “It takes a strong car to win in this class this year. I’ve had a lot of help with mine to get it this fast. I appreciate all the help getting it dialed in. It sure was hooked up tonight.”
Moore found himself up front in the Mini Stock feature when early leader Jimmy Childs slipped up on the backstretch. The driver from Mechanic Falls took over the point at lap five and powered his way to Victory Lane in a caution-free contest. Calvin Rose Jr. drove from ninth on the grid to claim second, while Kevin Bishop finished third. Scott Farrington and Rob Greenleaf completed the top five.
“This one is special tonight,” an emotional Moore said after the race. “It would have been my aunt’s 58th birthday, but she passed away a couple of weeks ago. I’d like to think she was looking down on us tonight. This win is definitely dedicated in her memory.”
