This commencement and a graduation ceremony at the South Campus in Livermore Falls on Saturday were firsts for the new Spruce Mountain High School, created by the merger of schools in Livermore Falls and Jay.
North Campus salutatorian Alexi Deering noted the merger in her graduation speech.
“We went from Cubs to Siberians to Tigers to Phoenix,” she said. “We made it!”
Deering shared some of her high school memories, recalling that the senior girls had never lost a “legitimate” tug of war match during their winter carnival festivities, and the boys’ basketball team handed Dirigo their only loss last season. She thanked the teachers for imparting their wisdom and parents for providing helpful guidance when needed.
“Today is the start of the rest of our lives,” she concluded.
Joshua Jones provided a stirring rendition of “Hotel California” on guitar, while Victoria Lacasse sang “For Good” from the musical “Wicked,” bringing tears to the eyes of many of the 700-plus packing the gymnasium.
Valedictorian Samantha Hutchinson provided her perspective on the seniors exiting one phase of their lives and beginning another.
“Graduation is one of the most memorable days in someone’s life,” she said. “Throughout the years, we have seen friends and siblings graduate. And now it’s our turn.”
The teachers, Hutchinson said, “have been preparing us with endless hours of education for life after school. Whether we are going into the Armed Forces, workforce or college after high school, life will be different. Remember the good times we had in high school, but look forward to the future.”
Principal Gilbert “Specs” Eaton presented scholarships to the class. A total of 120 scholarships totaling $251,325 for higher education were passed out.
Student Council President Catherine Castonguay led the flag salute at the beginning of the ceremony, and Class Vice President Felicia Greenleaf provided the welcome address.
The Spruce Mountain High School band provided the music for the processional and recessional.
