Danville Grange meeting

AUBURN — Members of Danville Junction Grange will dine at the Village Inn Restaurant on Thursday, June 14, at 5 p.m.

After dinner, a meeting will be held at the grange hall at 7 p.m., at which time there will be an election of officers.

Sabbathday nature hikes

NEW GLOUCESTER — Guided nature hikes around Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, will take place on Saturday, June 16, at both 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Hikers will walk through woods, fields, around the lake, Aurelia’s Cascade and the Old County Road. Historic preservation

NORTH YARMOUTH — Greg Paxton, executive director of Maine Preservation, presents “It’s Good to be Old: Talking About Historic Preservation” on Monday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Skyline Farm, The Lane.

Paxton will give an illustrated presentation about the great work that is done by Maine Preservation, a statewide advocacy organization now based in Yarmouth.

Lyme Disease program

AUBURN — The Maine Center for Disease Control will host an informational program on Lyme Disease prevention at the Auburn Public Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19. With this summer expected to be one of the worst infestations ever, the CDC will share important prevention measures along with a discussion on symptoms.

According to experts such as Dr. Sheila Pinette of the Maine Center for Disease Control, the pattern of warmer winters over the past 10 years means that ticks and Lyme disease will continue to spread and thrive in Maine. Although the worst infestations are still in southern and coastal Maine, the “tick line” of heavier infestations has moved steadily north.

Stukas joins MCC project

LEWISTON — The Maine Conservation Corps recently welcomed Heather Stukas of Lewiston to serve as an environmental educator and AmeriCorps volunteer at the Nahmakanta Public Reserved Land in northern Maine.

Stukas has served two previous terms with the MCC as an environmental educator at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The MCC places AmeriCorps volunteers throughout Maine to complete conservation and environmental education projects.

Stukas is the daughter of Richard and Susan Stukas, also of Lewiston. She is a 2005 graduate of Lewiston High School and a 2009 graduate of the University of Maine where she studied biology and history.

Trot for Autism 5K is July 28

LEWISTON — The 5k Trot for Autism will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Geiger Elementary School, to benefit the Margaret Murphy Center for Children.

MMCC is a special purpose nonprofit school, owned and operated by J.F. Murphy Homes Inc., which is dedicated to serving children and adolescents with autism and other developmental disabilities. The money raised will go to recreational opportunities.

The course is generally flat with one hill. The course will go out the school’s back entrance on to Central Avenue; right onto Montello, right onto College, right onto Stetson, right onto Hogan, right onto Montello, right onto Central and then return to the school.

Strawberry festival

NEW GLOUCESTER — The 2012 annual New Gloucester Strawberry Festival will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at the Congregational Vestry, 19 Gloucester Hill Road.

Native New Gloucester berries, homemade biscuits and Hodgman’s Frozen Custard will be featured. Other highlights of the festival are the Berry, Berry Good Band, a home-baked goods table and a local history display featuring the proposed new veterans’ memorial. Sponsored by the members and friends of the New Gloucester Historical Society.

Golf benefits cheerleaders

AUBURN — A golf tournament to benefit the University of Maine cheerleaders will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at Prospect Hill Golf Course.

Four people per team and the price is $60 per player. The cost also includes golf cart and a catered lunch.

The top three teams will receive prizes. Additional prizes are included for the longest drive, closest to the pin and the worst shot. A 50/50 and prize raffles also available.
