100 years ago, 1912
Everybody had a right good time at the annual lawn party of the First Universalist Church in Lewiston, which was held on the Maine State Fair Grounds, Tuesday afternoon and evening. After a supper served in the Track House, there were plenty of attractions. Of course, everyone ate pop ncorn, ice cream and candy, and, of course, everyone went “a-fishin’” in the fish pond and also tried his luck at the Jack Horner Pie. The confetti booth, too, was a popular place for all the young folks delighted in showering people with the colored bits of paper. The sale of confetti was large and the clothes-line was hung with fancy-work, which was on sale. During the evening, there was delightful music by Hobbs’s American Band.

BULLETIN – CAB Tells Northeast OK To Quit. The Civil Aeronautics Board in Washington tentatively approved today suspension of Northeast Airlines service to Houlton and Lewiston-Auburn, Maine. At the same time, Northeast was denied permission to suspend service at Bar Harbor and Rockland, Maine.

In Lewiston, a city where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 5 to 1, Thomas P. Peters II knows he’s fighting an uphill battle. But the editor of “The Elephant’s Ear,” a new bimonthly newsletter published by the Androscoggin County Republican Party, says he’s not working for the Grand Old Party’s dominance. “I’m a firm believer in at least a two-party system. Ultimately, that’s what’s best for our community,” Peters says. He hopes “The Elephant’s Ear” will eventually become a forum for local candidates and issues.
