MEXICO — Residents turned down a plan to expand the Recreation Committee and narrowly defeated two questions that would have allowed the sale and use of fireworks.
Mexico determines its annual budget by referendum. In addition to turning down $144,101 for the operation of the Recreation Department, they also turned down an unclassified or miscellaneous article of $64,751. With those two articles defeated, the selectmen’s recommended 2012-13 budget was reduced to $2,802,248 from a proposed $3,011,100.
That figure, however, will likely change when selectmen decide what step to take next on the defeated articles.
Town Clerk Penny Duguay said the board can decide to use last year’s adopted figures, or submit some other figures for resident action.
For the Recreation Department, that number was $93,585. Voters turned down the recommended amount by a vote of 158-209. For unclassified, the figure was $62,612. That was turned down by a vote of 160-187. The unclassified or miscellaneous account includes such things as economic development-related items, travel and training, code enforcement expenses, and dues to several municipally-related organizations.
With residents voting 189-169 to restrict the sale of fireworks, Duguay said that means an ordinance will likely be drawn up to reflect the vote of residents.
The use of fireworks in town was defeated by a vote of 184-173.
Residents also elected Richard Philbrick to another three-year term on the Board of Selectmen, and Peter Zanoni to another three-year term on the RSU 10 board. Neither was opposed.
