Free language learning

LEWISTON — In June 2011, the Lewiston Public Library purchased 12 licenses for the Rosetta Stone interactive language learning software program and began offering its patrons free language learning for six languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic and Chinese.

After 1600 users and 1000 hours of usage, the Lewiston Public Library has added two more licenses. Today, in addition to the computer lab, patrons can access Rosetta Stone from two private study rooms on the second floor.

Anyone interested in learning one of the languages offered should come to the library and register. The lab is open Monday through Saturday during the following hours: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

World Priest Day is June 15

AUBURN — A world day of prayer for the sanctification of priests will take place at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, June 15, at Saint Dominic Academy, Auburn campus. One June 15, World Priest Day, the public is invited to join for the prayer of the Rosary with the Annual Global Rosary Relay.

Block party for children

AUBURN — On Saturday, June 16, Journey Student Ministries and the Court Street Baptist Church Board of Christian Education will sponsor a block party for area children at Auburn’s Chestnut Street Park beginning at 11 a.m.

The event, part of activities leading up the CSBC’s Vacation Bible School later in the month, will feature music, games, face painting, a bouncy house, animal balloons and other fun activities, as well as free food.

LEWISTON — The Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute will host an information session followed by free vein screenings on Wednesday, June 20.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Carmine Frumiento, M.D., will speak about the current procedures available to reduce the discomfort and appearance of varicose veins. He will also introduce Michael Ricci, M.D., CMHVI’s newest vascular surgeon.

The information session will be offered from 1 to 2 p.m. in the first-floor Young Wing conference room at CMHVI, 60 High St. The screenings will follow from 2 to 4 p.m. in the CMHVI Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center, also located on the first floor at 60 High St.

The screenings are for women between 35 and 64 years of age and men age 40 and up.

Dystrophy lock-up is June 20

LEWISTON — DaVinci’s Eatery will host more than 100 community and business leaders throughout the Lewiston-Auburn area at the  Lewiston-Auburn 2012 Lock-up to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Maine, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 20.

The eatery is at 150 Mill St.

Shaker herb workshops

NEW GLOUCESTER — June Herb Workshops will be held at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, on June 23 and 30.

The June 23 presentation will be “Planning an herb garden: Year one.” Hands-on planning will leave participants with a written garden plan based on site, climate, soil and plants.

“Cooking with lavender” will be the topic on June 30. Recipes galore will be available and a lavender meal will be created. Recipe books and plant samples provided.

Woodcarving workshop

NEW GLOUCESTER — A Beginners’ Woodcarving Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26.

Vacation Bible School

AUBURN — “Adventure on Promise Land” will be the Vacation Bible School theme at the Court Street Baptist Church, 129 Court St., from June 25-29.

The program, “where kids discover God’s lifesaving love,” will be in session from 9 a.m. through noon each day, and is open to all children entering kindergarten through sixth grade. Van rides are available by calling the church office at 784-6661.

VBS Director Darlene Conant invites children to “come and discover God’s love, and experience lots of fun through games, crafts and exciting music.” Refreshments will be served.
