100 years ago, 1912
While driving his Knox touring car across the North Bridge Thursday noon, Fred M. Furbush of Auburn, who has charge of the heel shop at the country jail, ran into the Lewiston end of the bridge and damaged the front end of his machine quite badly. “I was going about seven miles an hour,” says Mr. Furbush, “and probably would not have met with the accident if it had not been for the rain, which made the wheels skid.”

50 years ago, 1962
The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department has resumed its annual summer patrol of the outlying towns of the county and is especially looking out for “wild teenage parties.” Investigation has revealed in several cases that the parties were held at camps and on property which later turned out to be owned by a relative of one of the party members. “We are also watching amusement places within the county,” said Sheriff Robert W. Bonenfant. “Sometimes we find that roughnecks move in and we have already run into one such situation this year. Rival groups sometimes have the idea they are taking over and they have to be straightened out.”

25 years ago, 1987
Hot, humid weather took its toll on runners, canoeist and cyclists competing against the clock in the sixth annual Androscoggin Challenge Triathlon. According to Triathlon Director Daniel Campbell, an above average number of teams (about ten) dropped out because of heat and humidity problems. Between 550 and 600 people competed in 14 categories over a 37-mile course. Men and women competed in two- and four-person teams as well as individually for race honors.
