BUCKFIELD — Voters rejected a request for a loan of $174,200 to start rebuilding town roads.

Two amendments failed before a third amendment passed that took the loan out of the article for summer roads. The summer roads  budget ended up at $352,905.

One person wanted the town to raise the money through taxation rather than get a loan. Charles Berg said it was not a good time to raise money. Others suggested many ways to get around borrowing, but simply removing the $174,200 out of the article was finally approved.

The administration budget drew lots of discussion because a 3 percent raise was inserted.  Amendments were proposed in an effort to try and get the 3 percent out, but in the end, the budget passed as written for $215,785.

The Fire Department needs air bottles to replace the obsolete ones and to have enough for all personnel. Again voters tried to take out the raise, but all amendments failed and the fire budget passed as written for $253,065 after an amendment to reduce the figure to last year’s $145,6210 failed.

The zero in the budget for social services was amended to $2,000.

The Public Works budget was reduced by $2,000 after Town Manager Dana Lee said they had found a lawnmower that was $2,000 cheaper than they thought they would have to pay. Voters passed Public Works budget of $107,320.

After all the adjustments at the annual town meeting, the overall budget will be approximately $1.5 million.
